Understanding an HVAC System

An HVAC system maintains the temperature and air quality of your home or business. When it is working correctly, all you notice is a comfortable atmosphere. However, a system takes several pieces of equipment and professional technicians to keep that comfort constant. There are three main components of an HVAC system: heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

Heating

Keeping a space warm when it is cold outside requires some form of heating unit. The most common types of heating systems are furnaces, boilers and heat pumps. In a modern HVAC system, heat is most often distributed through the building as warm air blown through a system of ducts and vents. This ductwork is also used by the other elements of the system as the comfort needs change during the course of the year.

Ventilation

As construction techniques improve, homes and commercial structures tend to be sealed better. Consequently, it’s harder to get fresh air into a modern building. There is a serious potential for the accumulation of dust, allergens, and other irritants. This is especially the case in modern office buildings where windows might not open easily. The ventilation piece of the HVAC system works to bring fresh air into a building while transferring stale air to the outside. New systems may also include air filtration and purifying equipment to scrub the air before it arrives in populated parts of the building. Modern innovations, such as the heat recovery ventilator, improve efficiency by drawing heat out of stale air and warming fresh air as it enters.

Air Conditioning

In the warmer months, the third part of the HVAC system starts its work. Of course, this is the air conditioner. A fully integrated system will use a traditional central air conditioning unit, though heat pumps can also perform the work of cooling a building. In the summer, cool air will come from the same ducts that blew warm air in the winter. Air conditioning also helps to remove moisture from the humid summer atmosphere.
